Common A/C Problems
Plaguing Homeowners

As we head into the hottest summer days here in Southern Maryland, you want to be sure your A/C is up to the task of keeping your home cool. With routine maintenance, your system should give you dependable service all summer long, but there are things that can go wrong. Here are four common A/C problems and corrective steps you can try before you call an HVAC professional:

The System Won't Run

Check that your thermostat is set in “cooling” mode and that the temperature is set below room temperature. Make sure the equipment has power. Check that the power cord, if there is one, is plugged in or that the switch near the air handler is in the “on” position. Check for blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers. If these steps fail to get the system started, you may have a faulty motor or compressor. It is time to call in the experts.

The System Doesn't Adequately Cool

Be sure your thermostat is set correctly and clean the evaporator. If your house is still not cool enough after a few hours of running the A/C, your cooling equipment may too small for your home’s cooling load. Keep in mind that a system sized for our average summer days may not be able to keep up on the occasional extremely hot days. Use ceiling fans, wear light clothing and take other steps to try to stay cool on really hot days.

The System Runs But Doesn't Cool

Try cleaning the evaporator and condenser coils and changing the air filter. Clear weeds and other obstructions from the outdoor unit. If the system still won’t cool, you might need a refrigerant recharge or a new compressor.

System Cycles On and Off Frequently

Thoroughly cleaning the A/C system could eliminate this problem, or it could be a sign that your equipment is oversized. Call an HVAC contractor if the problem persists. Frequent cycling will reduce equipment life and interfere with humidity control.
