Heat Pump Repair– Southern MD

Looking for a local HVAC Contractor who repairs heat pumps in St. Mary's, Calvert and Charles counties?

Heat pump systems provide both heating and cooling all year. If your heat pump isn't performing as it should, here's a few troubleshooting tips.

Troubleshooting Your Heat Pump

Winter Icing

During the cold winter months, it's normal for your heat pump to have a thin coat of frost. But if the top of your unit has a heavy coat of ice, or the coils are encased in ice, or the entire unit is covered with a thick sheet of snow and ice,you could have a problem. A lot of ice will prevent the transfer of heat between the unit's refrigerant and the outside air. which could interfere with its performance.

Warning: To eliminate the chance of irreparable damage, you should remove the ice as soon as possible. Ice in the coils can damage the sensitive fins, fan blades, and could lead to compressor failure. Do not use a sharp object to chip away the ice.

Summer Icing

It's rare that a heat pump will ice-up in the summer. However, if you have ice accumulating on your indoor unit, you can bet there is a problem with your system. It could be a refrigerant leak, clogged filter, or very dirty coils that are keeping heat from transferring as it should. If this is the case, turn off your system and call Tri-County Aire for service.

Heat Pump Runs Continuously

If this happens in the summer it could be a sign that your unit is struggling to reach a temperature that's set low during a time of triple-digits. So before your call for service, check the thermostat's setting.

If your heat pump is running continuously in the winter, that’s how it is designed to work. Hoever if the temperature is above the mid 30’s and your heat pump is still running all the time, you could have a service issue, such as leaking refrigerant, a frozen outdoor unit, or compressor problem. If this is the case, be sure to call Tri-County Aire for service.

Heat Pump Blowing Cold Air When in Heat Mode

First, check to see that the unit isn't in the A/C mode. Then check the outdoor unit to make sure it isn't covered with ice.

If your system is set for heat and isn't covered with ice, then it might have a valve problem, a refrigerant charge issue, or a compressor problem. It could be that your unit is long over due for maintenance and cleaning.
