Extending the Life of Your HVAC System: Follow These Tips and You Can

Cold Home-Boiler Troubles

Quality HVAC equipment is quite an investment, so it makes sense to do what you can to ensure that you get the best return possible on that investment. When it comes to HVAC equipment, that means getting reliable, efficient heating and cooling performance for as many years as possible. Here are some simple tips that can help you keep your equipment at its best, extending the life of your HVAC system.

  • Change air filters regularly – A dirty air filter can make the HVAC system work harder than it should, so be sure to check the filter monthly and change as soon as dust has started accumulating. For most systems, that’s at least once every 1 to 3 months. This simple task is essential for extending the life of your HVAC system.

  • Ensure proper airflow – Good airflow is essential to proper HVAC system function, as well as air quality. Ensure proper airflow by keeping all vents open and allowing the free flow of air between rooms by keeping doors between them open whenever possible.

  • Keep vents clean – Vents in your home should be vacuumed at least once a year and grills wiped clean of dust and debris.

  • Check discharge pipes and condensate tubes – These features carry moisture away from the HVAC system. Keep them free of clogs to avoid damage to the HVAC system and your home.

  • Keep outdoor equipment clean and clear – If your system has an outdoor condenser unit, keep it clear of weeds, debris or anything else that may inhibit airflow. Also, the condenser coil should be sprayed down with a hose once in a while, since a clean coil operates most efficiently.

Of course, professional maintenance is also essential to keeping your system reliable, so don’t forget to schedule yours at the start of the heating and cooling seasons.
