Why your heat pump needs cleaning after high winds and storms.

High winds, tornados, and hurricanes stir up dust and debris that can coat the outdoor unit reducing its efficiency.

If a storm has recently passed through your area, take a moment to check your outdoor unit's surrounding area for debris and make sure that your unit is still level on the ground or its pad.

If your system no longer works after a storm, be sure to check your circuit breaker to make sure it hasn’t tripped.

How does dust and debris lower the efficiency of your heat pump?

As the wind picks up, dust blankets the outdoor unit. Whether you're heating or cooling your home, the outdoor unit needs to be clean and free of debris such as dust, grass clippings, cobwebs, etc. If it’s coated with debris, it will struggle to deliver heating or cooling while increasing your utility bill.

So, how do I properly clean my outdoor unit?

If you choose to clean it yourself your efforts could result in damaging it. For instance, if you choose to spray with water at high pressure, the delicate fins could be bent adversely affecting the distribution of air over the condenser coil.

In some cases, the fins can be bent back to their proper shape, but there is also a risk of breaking or severely damaging the fins.

To get your unit properly cleaned, call Tri-County Aire. Our HVAC technicians will clean your unit quickly and efficiently.
