History of Charlotte Hall

In the late 1600s, a mysterious illness began affecting numerous residents of Southern Maryland. Many people believed that bathing in one of the local springs helped cure the illness, and the governor ordered a hospital and care home to be established near the spring. The hospital was one of the first of its kind in the colonies, and the local population began to grow as more people heard about the cure. In 1774, the Charlotte Hall Military Academy was built on the grounds of the former hospital. Named in honor of England’s Queen Charlotte, it was one of the oldest institutions in the country. After the school closed in 1976, the building was converted into the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home. Today, much of the area is now part of the Charlotte Hall Historic District.

Climate and Weather

Mechanicsville’s temperate climate is marked by mild transitional seasons, hot summers and chilly winters. Due to its location on the Atlantic Coastal Plain, Mechanicsville is heavily influenced by the nearby waters of the Gulf Stream. In summer and early fall, these warm waters draw tropical moisture that can produce coastal flooding and high winds. In the winter, nor’easters and clippers can bring cold, driving rain or snow to the area. Fortunately, the nearby waters also moderate Mechanicsville’s temperatures and shelter it from the extremes that plague inland regions.

Local Events and Popular Attractions

There are many Amish farms located throughout Charlotte Hall and the surrounding communities. The North St. Mary’s County Farmers Market is located in the Charlotte Hall Library and features local produce, baked goods and other specialties from Amish businesses. The Dent Chapel was built in 1883 on the grounds of the Charlotte Hall Military Academy, and today, it is a popular stop for visitors touring the historic area.
