Improving Your Home's Comfort & Air Quality

With more people working from home, it may be time to improve their home's comfort level and air quality.

The proper installation and maintenance of your HVAC system is imperative if you want to achieve energy efficiency and overall home comfort. To get you headed in the right direction, here are seven tips for finding a heating and cooling contractor are you comfortable doing business with:

  • Check with your family and friends. Finding someone who already uses a reputable contractor can cut a lot of precious time out of your search.

  • Get a list of referrals. If the HVAC technician you’re considering has a problem with providing you a list of references, move on. When you do get a list, call each person and ask about their experience with the contractor. Pay attention to details like efficiency, time frames and professionalism.

  • Ask about special discounts. Many HVAC technicians offer discounted prices on certain services, especially if you’re a new customer or during a specific season. First check their website and then call to inquire about any other specials.

  • Expect an evaluation. Once you choose a contractor, you should expect a visit to your home to evaluate your needs. Efficiency, ductwork and a slew of other items should be on their agenda. Go over what they’ll be checking ahead of time so you’ll know what to expect.

  • Use Energy Star appliances. A good contractor will want you to use appliances that have been qualified by Energy Star to improve your home’s energy efficiency. He or she should also be able to calculate your estimated savings from this equipment.

  • Compare estimates. Obtaining estimates from multiple contractors is always a good idea. Just remember that a price isn’t the only factor. Also look at proposed time of completion, type of equipment to be installed, warranty details and other factors that are important to you.

  • Insist on a written proposal. Before a contractor starts any job, be sure that you obtain a written proposal that will cover every step and detail of the work to be performed.
